On June 29, 2002, the 21 gamers that drove to meet
each other and play some games for one evening didn't know they were
starting something that would grow into a considerable event that
would push on for years to come. Pulling
more electricity than planned out of a quiet auction house in Massillon,
Ohio, friends from online met each other for the first time travelling
from suprisingly great distances, such as Iowa.
There were no sponsors,
no website, no reservations, and a little
bit of planning for a one day event.
It's possible that more food was consumed
than games played, but there is no doubt
that we had crossed over from virtual
friendship to the real thing. Many of
these original 21 continue to return
to FragFestOhio each year.

It wasn't long after our first party that plans were
underway for another gathering. The next summer of 2003, on the hot
and steamy weekend of August 15-17, 39 gamers and a dog came together,
many of which were veterans
of 2002. The location: a barn in the middle of the beautiful Cuyahoga
River Valley in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Tents were set up, fires were
built, bats flew in and the gaming started! A field trip to a local
rock quarry was called short by lightning, but broke up the weekend
nicely. The closest we got to a "theme" was the words "Cover
Me!" on the back of the black shirts. Cool rain on a hot, overdrawn
dual breaker somewhere on a utility pole stopped the action for a
little bit, but a quick trip to the store fixed everything!
From Friday until Sunday
we played. All of a sudden it wasn't
the "little lan game" anymore.
Various prizes were handed out from
a few sponsors, a few card games broke
out, and some interesting things happend
at the firepit. Note: a relationship
with
Fine-Line Communications was begun when they
wired up this antique barn for the LAN,
and they've been wonderful to us since!

2004. Wow. Just wow. We went to a new level: 30 more
people than last year in a lot less space, but we traded that for
air conditioning,
sand volleyball, and a wonderful group of sponsors which completely
covered the back of our shirt!
FragFestOhio, July 23-25,
2004 - "Together We Spawn,"
in Lancaster was a complete success!
In all, 65 attendees and the local dog
pound.
One of the biggest themes
that came out of 2004 was the appreciation
of all the activities other than gaming.
We had found out that we could plug
into our computers from home, but the
real joy of our lan was, and brace yourself,
social interaction! Volleyball and horseshoe
tournaments, Texas Holdem, an amazing
load of sponsored doorprizes, wonderful
ladies taking pictures and making food,
and a sweet case modification contest
all made for a well rounded event!
In 2004 we introduced
fragfestohio.com previous to the event.
We plastered it with sponsors and even
listed an official staff page. Staff
for a little gaming party? Yep, volunteers
that gave of their time so that we could
strengthen friendships that will last
a lifetime.
Our online base of operations
also changed, as we moved from a single
"clan" to a Gamers Coalition,
which carries on the tradition of friendly
gaming and good fun.

FragFestOhio 2005: The Fellowship of the Ping
Once again FragFestOhio made strides in the world of LAN events.
We stepped out of the private sector (garages and barns) and made
ourself
known in the real world, renting out the ballroom at the Holiday
Inn in Hudson. With an upgraded website for itself, FragFestOhio,
fostered through the explosion of gamerscoalition.com, has made
some real professional strides.
For the first time, we offered a cash prize to the winning team
in CS:S (as opposed to doing a random draw cash tourney). Congratulations
to team M1 for taking our money without breaking a sweat!
We said hello to comfortable beds and goodbye to electrical issues.
The Texas Holdem tourney was a complete success! Friendships were
deepend, and faces were put to names. The number of 1st time FFers
was impressive, with 35 of the 76 gamers in attendance being of
the n00b class. We also welcomed back several gamers who could not
attend in 2004!

FragFestOhio 2006: Broadband of Brothers
Back in Hudson once again, FragFestOhio 2006 was a great success.
We started on Wednesday for
a "pre pre party" around an incredible fire (see Ebil's
video), got up and golfed on Thursday morning (if you can call what
we did golf), set up and let 'er rip the next morning!
We had 78 gamers this year, more than ever. However, our goals
are not to get bigger, but to better provide an atmosphere for gaming
and fellowship that makes you want to return!
